Vlog on how I volunteered in Vukovar, Croatia by Acy Varlan

In this vlog we spent a weekend in Vukovar, Eastern Croatia. It was not my first time in Vukovar, as that I did my volunteering service there last year. I revisited the places we have been and recollected a few videos from last year.

I talked about EVS= ESC(2019) service and how to become a volunteer. I am not equipped to talk about Vukovar’s tragedy, but as a volunteer living there I heard a lot of stories during the war and observed how the city blossomed through the year, so I focused my attention on the positive parts.

SOME WORDS ABOUT BOLZANO:

Bolzano-Bozen is an autonomous province situated in North Italy with having its borders to Austria and Switzerland. Together with Trento, it makes up the region of Trentino Alto Adige/Südtirol one of the five autonomous regions in Italy. Bolzano happens to be a unique example of cohabitation with hosting Austro-Hungarian origined inhabitants as majority of its population who speak an Austro-Bavarian dialect of German, about a quarter of the province is Italian-speaking and a small minority speaks Ladin as mother tongue, while both Italian and German are the official languages of Bolzano-Bozen. As a result of sheltering a multilingual and multicultural population, Bolzano happens to be one of the most important examples of ‘coexistence atmosphere’ in the territory of Italy. The province in total has more than 500.000 inhabitants and hosts the Free University of Bozen which makes it easier to find free time activities compared to the rest of the smaller Italian cities. Bolzano is also blessed with the luck of being situated among the Alps and the Dolomites which were declared as world heritage by UNESCO in 2009. An unforgettable experience in Armenia by Ecaterina Babitina

It was a great challenge. About two weeks spent learning together, 8 countries, 40 participants. Hospitable Armenian, awesome Armenia and unpredictable Dilijan’s weather. Tomorrow it is going to be finished. Two days left and so many emotions. I remember the very first meeting under the Big Clocks in Yerewen’s Republic Square. Almost strange people gathered to do great things even to improve our digital competencies and to have an intercultural exchange. And now I can say, we did it. Every day we learned new digital tool as Google AdWords & Analytics, Buzzsumo & Hotjar, Simplu Measured & SimilarWeb,  Keyword planner & Hotsuite, Facebook Ad Manager & Chattbot, Canva, Photo shooting & video making.

It was learned during simulator tasks, discussion and exchange of experience. It would be amost impossible to do it by myself. Besides this we have developed our own product using three random things and wrote a business plan step by step completing Canvas model. We were learning about all day, but It was so excited, I didn’t even realize how much I’m going to bring with me in my daily life. But the Youth Exchange was not only about knowledges. It was about people and intercultural communication.

Cultural evenings got the  chance to present yourself and to have a short idea about others. We have dances ukrainian “Ruceiok” and moldawian “Hora”, tasted armenian pomegranate wine and portuguese yolk dessert, learned spanish way to cheer, german humor and france landscape. We have even cooked georgian “Khinkali&” and armenia weeding sweet “Gata”. And that is not all! We had a study visit to “Dilijan Community Center”, discovered Dilijan and local people, visited saint monasteries Haghartsin and Goshavang. Even that is not all that we did during the Youth Exchange. Thank you organisators for this great opportunity and
unforgettable experience.

Youth exchange Learn, Animate, Include – Belgium

General information:

  • Location: Belgium, Kasterlee
  • Deadline for application: October 4th 2019
  • Start of project: 03/11/2019
  • End of project: 11/11/2019

Dear participants,

Local community have a huge potential in terms of informing, making awareness, including and building a community therefore specific methods designed for community work are highly recommended in this field and specially in times when they are not so widely applied. Youth work plays an essential role in reaching and bringing together young people who face exclusion on a daily basis. Animation is considered one of the powerful tool for youth workers reaching out young people with fewer opportunities and uniting the community. An animator is therefore like a facilitator – like an electrician who arranges electrical cables, switches, plugs, sockets, cut-outs, holders into a circuit and connects it to the mains, so that whenever necessary, the current flows and lights come on, fans rotate, appliances start operating. In this example the electrician is neither the power nor its source but he/she facilitates the flow of power to get things to work by keeping everything connected.

With this youth exchange we would like to motivate young people to become active within their local communities using animation as a tool for inclusion. During the youth exchange participants will get the chance to experience and share different animation tools that can be used for inclusion.

After practicing different animation tools we will organize a final event with local children or youth where participants get the change to practice the animation tools gained during the youth exchange. All the participants are expected to take part in this event.

The project will follow the non – formal educational approach, the methods will provide active participation of young people, youth leaders and inspire them through creative activities. This exchange will provide them theoretical and practical inputs and activities.

This YE gathers 40 participants aged between 18 and 30. The participating countries are: Moldova, Armenia, Belgium, Spain, Serbia, Turkey, Italy & Cyprus.

Having participants from so many different backgrounds will encourage young people to participate in an international context, promoting tolerance, being more open and knowing different cultures without prejudices, developing the feeling of belonging to Europe and rising the citizen participation.

Working language of the youth exchange will be English.

“VUKOVAR SUMMER VIBES” The project that changed my life by Victoria Anghel

Short Introduction

So let me introduce myself, I am Victoria Anghel, born and raised in the Republic of Moldova, I am a person who strives for art and the beauty in the world, but also ways to improve and help others. And this is how I came along this awesome project, “Vukovar Summer Vibes”. As for myself, I am a student at the department of Fine Arts & Design, at the Pedagogical State University of Ion Creanga in Chisinau, I love to create, and I love to share my knowledge with the world.

“VUKOVAR SUMMER VIBES”
The project that changed my life

This article is the apex of my experience from the past two months, that I got to spend in the amazing city of Vukovar, from the very first steps to the last ones, ups and downs, from what I knew and have been doing to things that I learned and experienced for the first time. Past month and a half, flew away in a blink of an eye. It was an unbelievable experience for me and totally new one as well. I met so many people from around the world, made so many local friends that I will miss so much, but that gives me more reasons to visit Vukovar again! For its people, for its beauty, kindness and so much more. But that wasn’t the main goal of this project, what was really important to me is to meet the requirements and do a lot more than I ever would. I wanted to help people from different backgrounds, to see the world from the other side of the coin, as well as help children and youth. We spend days creating a schedule where every volunteer could get involved from Educational workshops that included: singing, learning of English and Spanish languages, playing drums and other instruments, to Arts and Crafts workshops, part of which I was myself, by hosting a workshop dedicated to “Mixed Art Techniques”. I would not forget the IT camp week, that one week
gathered an amazing amount of participants, it was nice to see that the children and youth enjoyed that time and some of them even came back for other workshops. As of my personal growth, besides becoming more open as a person, I got an
opportunity to work as a part of the PR team, and for 2 weeks even as a lead PR, where I did work related to graphic design, such as making flyers, posters, schedules, but also working on YPGDs social media, from taking pictures with a camera to editing, and posting them, creating events and banners for them, writing articles on the “http://ypgd.org/index.php/en/”.

I will never forget the first time when I went to Vukovars’ Ada island. An unbelievable piece of land, with sandy beaches, beautiful sun shining into my eyes. It was the island where we spent most of our sunny afternoons playing with children, swimming in the cold water of the river, where sport activities and not only, like football, volleyball, frisbee, face painting, balloon making took place. First August week marked itself in my calendar, with the meeting of the of the Mayor of Vukovar, in which we had a press conference were we spoke about what we achieved during the previous month, and what impact it had on people of Vukovar, we gave interviews to the local press, answered questions as “What made you pick this city” or “Do you think it is an important/ useful program for young people” and “What was your experience during your stay in vukovar”.

Second week of August started with the preparation for the International Youth Day, followed by the 2 day event itself. During those 2 days I helped in the PR office as well as preparing my “Painting Spot” that I had on the Youth Day, where every child could take part in. But the main Youth Day wasn’t only for children, it was about the importance of European Union in Croatia, about the opportunities in education, jobs, social opportunities and so much more. It was about informing mainly. But it had its fun parts too, our team of volunteers came up with a plan to create a challenge, which would make youth get involved as well, they had to compete by completing “quizzes” and quests. I also was part in a drum circle, that took place in the main city square of Vukovar, it created great vibes of music that was inviting everyone walking by to join us. Other all it was a great experience, and I hope that everyone who was involved could agree, as there was a good amount of positive feedback coming from local
people.

My personal goal for this project was, to become more open and outgoing, or as my coordinator says “Be nice, Be on time, Do good”, I indeed became more confident in myself, I became more sociable, and outgoing, I gained the initiative that I didn’t have before, learned what it is to be a leader and how to lead, and all that thanks to the opportunity given to me by the sending organization “ADVIT, Europa fară frontiere”, and to the hosting organization “Y.P.G.D.”, or “Youth Peace Group Danube”. I never imagined myself, going as far and having such a great chance to see another country. It may sound strange, for a short term
project volunteer to say that Vukovar and Croatia itself, became my second home, there was never a day when I was walking outside thinking that its a place that I don’t belong to, and so I even started saying that I am home without noticing. All thanks to the group of volunteers I’m surrounded by, kind and outgoing people, ready to help you with anything, it be a shoulder to cry on or a person to go out for a run. I can surely say that when I will be leaving, there’s going to be tears in my eyes, hoping that I will get to spend another summer with these amazing people, in the amazing city of Vukovar!

Liviu Rotaru’s ESC Adventure in Vevelstad, Norway/

This is an short article that our local Moldovan, Liviu wrote about his 1 year journey in the beautiful Vevelstad, Norway.

“I believe that one must love his or her country very much before one leaves for another place. I’ve always loved Moldova and I’ve been working with youth and developing projects here since the age of 15. After graduating high school, I desired to challenge myself even more and to test my skills in an international environment. Deciding to volunteer abroad for one year is the perfect illustration of how to be stubborn about your goal, but flexible about your methods. And because once in a lifetime experiences need to be chosen wisely, I chose Norway.

Never have I ever been afraid of moving so far North, nearby the Polar Circle. If anything, I am deeply fond of the Nordic culture. Hence, my expectations have been exceeded more and more every day. Living in a Norwegian host family has been, by far, the most powerful experience I’ve ever had. Besides, they taught me more than twelve years of school had, and talking to some young people from that small community felt like interacting with the characters from my favourite books. Vevelstad is an astonishing place and I want to believe that our service there has made it even nicer.

My colleagues at the Volunteering Central and I organized the most sundry activities for the children, teenagers, immigrants and the seniors of Vevelstad: filming course, youth house, sportive competitions, laser tag, events, fairs, a gala, beach cleaning activities and a lot more. We were even invited to the European Youth Week in Brussels to retell about our achievements. It has not always been easy, of course. There have been misunderstandings, but due to them I gained a better insight of who I am and who I want to be.

After work, I had all the time in the world (especially during summer time, when the sun never sets) to explore the raw nature, wandering through the forests and on the mountain peaks. Skiing, fishing, camping, swimming, kayaking, sailing, capturing the Northern Lights – I did everything for the first time! I learned the language, I got to know the culture and I travelled to the most picturesque parts of Norway like a local.

I’ve never thought that my heart can bear so much emotion or so much life, and now my heart is divided between to places… It is a tremendous feeling and I can only wish it to anybody who is brave enough to take such a challenge!”

Thank you for your amazing words Liviu.

Join us and find fulfilling adventures all across Europe.

Voluntarii despre proiect:

Va multumesc și va doresc o vara frumoasa in continuare!
